Becca and Amal, the founders of 5 Kites Education, met while teaching in Mombasa, Kenya. Both are originally from the UK, but had independently decided to accept a two-year teaching contract, leaving the inner city London state sector for schools on the Kenyan coast.
Becca became Head of English at the Mombasa Academy, Nyali, and Amal started teaching Maths and later became Head of Year at the Aga Khan Academy in central Mombasa. They shared a vision for outstanding Education and a real passion for teaching, albeit in very different subjects. They were also both dedicated to community impact and assisted with voluntary projects with the hope of improving the lives and opportunities for others. In Kenya, only Primary Education is 'free' for all children, but the cost of uniform, text books, school lunches can be off putting for many families.
Fast forward through ten years of professional experience, personal development and life lessons and we arrive at the inception of 5 Kites Education, committed to providing the very best of individual one-to-one tuition, but also seeking an opportunity to raise funds for scholarships for school children in Mombasa: a city close to the hearts of our founders.
Our partner charity is Hatua Network, a Kenyan-run philanthropic network based in Mombasa, to help children from low-income homes with their entire academic journey. Hatua means 'step' and by taking each small step at a time, Hatua Network aims to end generational poverty by supporting and preparing promising, low-income youth for the world of work.
It has been an important part of 5 Kites Education to continue to use the privilege of the founders' own UK state education, opportunities and experience to help those for whom education is still a luxury.
